Most people prefer to have the White pieces as they feel they can dictate play, start attacks and are more likely to win. Against 1.e4 the Sicilian Defense is the obvious choice. Against 1.d4 the stand-out opening is the King’s Indian Defense. The King’s Indian Defense is the choice of champions. Garry Kasparov and Bobby Fischer were devotees of the opening because they understood its complexities better than their opponents. Kasparov even used to great effect in this year’s Ultimate Blitz event against Caruana, Nakamura and Wesley So! However, this is one opening you need to understand deeply if you want to do well. White is allowed to get a big pawn center and loads of space. Black operates in cramped quarters on the Kingside.
